Makara Sankranti which falls on 14 January is a festival dedicated to the deity Surya (Sun).
It is also a harvest festival. It marks the first day of the sun's transit into Makara rashi (Capricorn), marking the end of the month with the winter solstice. Sankranti is observed with varied festivities such as colorful decorations, exchange of sweets/sesame seeds/sugarcane, melas (fairs), dances, flying kites, bonfires and feasts.
