Cooperation in the field of Education between India and Thailand

 

An MoU on Cooperation in the field of Education was signed in 2005. To implement this MoU, Joint Working Group was established. The first meeting of the JWG was held in Bangkok in 2007 and the second series in New Delhi in January 2016. MoU has been signed between ICCR and PBIC, Thammasat University on the establishment of the ICCR Hindi Chair at Pridi Banomyong International College of Thammasat University (valid til April 2025). MoU between ICCR and Silpakorn University on the establishment of the ICCR Chair of Sanskrit has been renewed on 11th April 2023 and will be valid until 31 December 2024. In addition, renewal of MoU between ICCR and Chiang Mai University on the establishment of Chair of Indian Studies is under process.

Currently, there are 6 India Studies Centres in Thailand at Chulalongkorn University, Silpakorn University, Thammasat University, Mahidol University, Chiang Mai University and Ubon Ratchathani University. In addition to India Studies Centre, 12 India Corners have been set up in Thai universities i.e. Pridi Banomyong International College of Thammasat University, Chulalongkorn University, Mae Fah Luang University, Surat Thani Rajabhat University, Prince of Songkla University, Chiang Mai University, Ubon Ratchathani University, Srinakharinwirot University, National Library of Thailand, Thammasat University (Rangsit Campus), Phranakhon Si Ayutthaya Rajabhat University, and International Pioneer School.

For the year 2022-23, India offers 71 scholarships under various schemes (ITEC – 40, ICCR Scholarships – 29 & Hindi Scholarship – 2) to Thailand. Apart from these annual scholarships, GOI offers 1,000 slots for ASEAN students (100 for each country) under Doctoral Fellowship in India for ASEAN (DIA) Programme for Ph.D. study at IITs. Also, 10 fellowships provided to Thai scientists and researchers for doing research in Science and Technology at premier institutes in India under India Science and Research Fellowship (ISRF) Programme. In addition, Nalanda University offers slots for students from Thailand for study in post graduate programmes under ASEAN Scholarship Scheme.

Ministry of Culture, Government of India provides Grant-in-aid to Indo-Foreign Friendship Cultural Societies functioning in Bangkok for their activities on annual basis. For the year 2022-23, an amount of Rs. 43.35 Lakhs was granted to 7 societies/ universities namely, India Studies Center of Chulalongkorn University, Sanskrit Studies Centre of Silpakorn University, Centre for Bharat Studies of Mahidol University, India Studies Centre of Thammasat University, Thai Bharat Cultural Lodge, India Studies Group of Ubon Ratchathani University and Indian Studies Center of Chiang Mai University.

Ministry of Education, Government of India provides secondment of professors for every semester to the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) for a period of 16 weeks in selected area of specialization. For August 2022, 4 professors were deputed and 1 professor was deputed for January 2023.

INDIAN TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC COOPERATION PROGRAMME (ITEC)

This Programme was launched in 1964 as a bilateral programme of assistance of the Government of India. The slots are offered to Thai officials for the short term training courses in Indian Institutes as well as online courses. The candidates are selected and nominated by the Thailand International Cooperation Agency, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Thai Government.

Scholarships are offered to students of Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (MGC) member countries desirous of studying undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. courses in Indian universities in various fields, excluding medicine, paramedicine and dentistry.

DR S RADHAKRISHNAN CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMME (CEP)

Under this scheme, scholarships are offered to Thai students for pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses, excluding medicine, paramedicine and dentistry, in Indian universities.

Scholarships are provided to Thai students to pursue courses at degree levels in Indian traditional medical system such as Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy as well as Yoga.

Nalanda University offers scholarships for students from Thailand to study Master’s Programmes in World Literature, Hindu Studies, Buddhist Studies, Philosophy and Comparative Religion, Sustainable Development and Management, Ecology and Environment Studies and Historical Studies, The scholarship covers academic fee, to and fro travel, residential charges and monthly stipend.
