Indian Cultural Centre organised an art exhibition at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre celebrating woman called “Naree” as it means the same in Hindi and Thai, in the works of seven resident Indian artists of Thailand. The idea behind the group exhibition was to provide a platform for resident Indian artists in Bangkok to showcase their artistic talent. Influenced by their experiences in Thailand the works in the exhibition spanned a range of methods, media and ideas.
Malini Mansukhani’s acrylics and oils asked the viewer: what if you couldn’t be you? Neerja Tata’s Patachitra works asserted that women are responsible for their own self respect and Ishrat Hashim’s mixed media creations challenged the viewer to accept Naree for what they are.
Anindam Choudhury viewed women through his camera and in the metaphor of dance portrayed them asserting their new found confidence. Umesh Phadke’s photographic works underlined women’s strength in portraits of Thai women in the unlikely professions they’ve chosen and informed us that women are redefining ideas of safe and appropriate professions for themselves. Vibha Sodhia’s canvases asked us to imagine a world without women, and Anjali Mandrekar’s charcoals and acrylics brought us full circle to the realization that women and men are inseparably connected and that we are in this together.
