India’s Chandrayaan-3 successfully lands on the Moon

 In a historical achievement, Chandrayaan-3, India’s third planetary science and exploration mission to the Moon, successfully landed on the Moon’s South Pole on 23 August 2023. With the successful landing, India became the first ever country to land at the South Pole of Moon and also the fourth country to land on the Moon. Chandrayaan-3 was launched by Indian Space Research Organization from India on 14 July 2023. The Mission included a lander (Vikram) and a rover (Pragyan).

 2.  Immediately after the successful landing of Vikram, President Droupadi Murmu conveyed that “it is truly a momentous occasion, the kind of event that happens once in a lifetime, making all Indians proud.” She also added that “the success of Chandrayaan is also a major achievement for the whole of humankind. It shows how India has harnessed its rich traditional knowledge base along with modern science in the service of humanity.”

 3.  In his congratulatory message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sated that “Chandrayaan-3’s triumph mirrors the aspirations and capabilities of 140 crore Indians” and “India’s successful moon mission is not India’s alone. This is a year in which the world is witnessing India’s G-20 presidency. Our approach of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ is resonating across the globe. This human-centric approach that we represent has been welcomed universally. Our moon mission is also based on the same human-centric approach. Therefore, this success belongs to all of humanity. And it will help moon missions by other countries in the future.”

 4.  Prime Minister Modi also conveyed that “I am confident that all countries in the world, including those from the Global South are capable of achieving such feats. We can all Aspire for the moon and beyond.”

 5.  India, while pursuing its national space programme, attaches great importance to international cooperation in peaceful use of outer space. As part of multifaceted and coridal ties with Thailand, India has been closely working with Thailand on cooperation on space.
