Commemoration of International Day of Non-Violence at UNCC, Bangkok

Embassy of India, Bangkok and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) jointly organized a special event on 2 October 2024 to commemorate the International Day of Non-Violence at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) in Bangkok. This day coincides with Mahatma Gandhi’s 155th Birth Anniversary.

In 2007, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 2 October, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, as the International Day of Non-Violence, to spread his message of peace, non-violence and social justice through education and public awareness campaigns, especially for the younger generation.

This year’s commemorative event was co-hosted by Mr. Nagesh Singh, Ambassador of India to Thailand and the Permanent Representative of India to UNESCAP, and Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary, UNESCAP. Ms. Sasirit Tangulrat, Director-General, Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Thailand graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The event was attended by Ambassadors and other members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of International Organizations, as well as members of the civil society and the Indian diaspora in Thailand.

The event started with paying of floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the UNCC, Bangkok. Thereafter, various dignitaries share their reflections on the life and enduring legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. Ambassador Nagesh Singh in his welcome remarks highlighted how India’s developmental journey is following the Gandhian principles of sarvodaya (progress for all), antyodaya (development of the downtrodden in the society) and living sustainably in harmony with the nature as propounded by Mahatma Gandhi.
