INDIAN ASSOCIATIONS IN THAILAND

Poet Rabindranath Tagore's visit to Bangkok in 1927 led the Indian community plan for establishing cultural exchange programmes between India and Thailand. Later, he persuaded Swami Satyanand Puri to go to Bangkok. Swamiji studied the Thai language and read several books in Thai language about Indian culture. He was also largely credited for laying the foundations for India's independence movement in South East Asia. He started the Bharat cultural lodge.

The Punjab migrants in Thailand initially centred their activities around the Gurdwara originally established in 1909 and later moved to Phahurat area in 1932. The Hindu Uttar Pradeshis founded the Vishnu Mandir in 1920 which became the cultural and literary centre for this community. In 1924, the Arya Samaj was found. Punjabi Hindus formed Hindu Sabha by 1924 which changed to Hindu Samaj in 1945.
