Commemoration of International Day of Non-Violence at UNCC, Bangkok

The International Day of Non-Violence was commemorated by the Embassy of India, Bangkok, in association with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) on 3 October 2022 at an event organised at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC), Bangkok.

In 2007, the UN General Assembly adopted a consensus resolution declaring 2 October, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, regarded as the apostle of peace, as the International Day of Non-Violence, with a goal to secure a culture of peace, tolerance and understanding with the help of the teachings of India's global icon, who inspired millions to adopt the path of non-violence.

The event began with paying of floral tributes to the bust of Mahatma Gandhi in the UNCC, Bangkok by the dignitaries. Mrs. Alpana Dubey, Charge d’Affaires, Embassy of India  delivered the opening remarks and addressed the event. Executive Secretary of UNESCAP, Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, also read the message of the UN Secretary General along with her own remarks at the event. Mr. Chuti Krairiksh, Minister of Social Development and Human Security of the Kingdom of Thailand graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and addressed the august gathering. A pre-recorded video message from Prof. N. Radhakhrishnan, Gandhian Thinker, was screened during the event. The event concluded with a  cultural programme curated by the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Bangkok.

The event was attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps, International Organizations, Indian diaspora, officials of the Government of the kingdom of Thailand and other dignitaries.
